Ski vacations Maribor - holiday in the largest winter sports centre in Slovenia!

Maribor is Slovenia's second largest city and lies only a stone's throw from the Austrian border, embedded in the hilly landscape of Pohorje. To Graz it is only approx. 60 km and therefore the these two cities operate in close, border-crossing relationships. Historically, Maribor is tightly connected to Austria: the former "Styrian Metropolis" was once part of the Austrian Styrian and used to be called "Marburg an der Drau". Only at the beginning of the 20th century was the city counted into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which declared itself independent in 1991, and so the town became part of Slovenia.

The University town offers a great selection of pretty architecture from varying ages, such as the castle, the basilica, the water tower and the town hall. Thanks to the lively, cultural atmosphere, the city was announce Cultural Capital of Europe in 2012. Maribor is a modern tourism centre and offers a large range of shopping facilities, museums, galleries, the Slovenian National Theatre, thermal baths and wine cellars. In the district of Lent, one can find is the oldest wine stock in the entire world, which has even made an appearance in the Guinness Book of World Records. An impressive wine farming museum is also to be found in Maribor.

Located at the foot of the Pohorje mountains, Maribor was announced Alpine City of 2000. The ski area Mariborsko Porhoje, just above Maribor itself, offers a total of 42 km of piste and is therefore Slovenia's largest winter sports area, offering diverse activities. The annual women's Alpine World Cup Races in slalom and giant slalom take place here. This also the venue for the declaration of the famous "Golden Fox" (slov. Zlata lisica), which is given to the fastest female racer.

The region of Podravska (at the Drau) is located in the north-eastern part of Slovenia, right on the border to Austria, and forms one of 12 statistic regions of the country. Lower Styria is also part of this regional categorisation. The largest of the 41 districts of this region is Maribor, with 112,000 inhabitants. The picturesque landscape on the Drau covers approx. 2,170 km² and is the perfect all-year-round destination. The Podravska forms one of the largest wine stock regions of Slovenia and therefore offers a range of good wines. The cultural centre of it all is Maribor, the University town with a large selection of cultural attractions and lots of relaxation possibilities. The Pohorje Mountain range is an approx. 1,000 km² large mountain region, which also hosts Slovenia's largest ski area, the Maribosko Pohoje.
