Ski vacations Gmunden - family holiday at the Feuerkogel!

Gmunden

The spa resort Gmunden is idillically located on the northern shore of the Traun lake, directly at the foot of the regional mountain Traunstein (1,691 m). Numerous mounatins form an impressive panoramic surrounding around the heart of the Salzkammergut. Culturally challenging, mediterranean flair and a shopping paradise for more exclusive shoppers as well as romantic stollers - spa resort and tourist magnet with relaxation possibitlities: Gmunden offers it all! Around the time of the monarchy, Gmunden was known as a renowned summer health resort, which still can be seen today from the numerous masions all around the resort. Historically important places, dotted between architecturally interesting middle class houses, mainly protected by the national trust, tight alley ways and romantic courtyards invite to take a tour of the town. In the 90's, a popular German TV series ("Schlosshotel Orth") was filmed at the town's landmark, the moated castle Ort. Fun on the pistes is guaranteed in the 20 km distant ski area "Feuerkogel", which from winter 2009/10 can add to it's value with a new gondola and chairlift.

Traunsee

The holiday region of Salzkammergut lies at the northern edge of the Alps in Upper Austria, directly on the border of Styria and near the city of Salzburg. The region stretches from Lake Wolfgang over the Alm valley and the Dachstein Glacier through to the town of Salzburg's eastern edge. Due to the superb location at the foothills to the Alps and at the edge of the northern Limestone Alps, the landscape harbours 76 smaller and larger lakes, such as Lake Wolfgang, Moon Lake, Lake Atter and the Lake Traun. Countless mountains, including the Dachstein, Traunstein and the Höllengebirge, form a magical panorama. Numerous cave systems have formed here, and the longest cave in Austria, the Hirlatz cave, can be viewed at the Dachstein Glacier.

Not only nature lovers and those seeking relaxation get their moneys worth in the Salzkammergut region, but winter sports fans do too: the mountains, usually not too high, are covered in forest right up to the peaks and have a diverse range of pistes. Families in particular are well taken care of in the 20 different ski areas. The prosperity due to the salt made the region affluent, shown by lovely villas and castles in the towns and villages. Relaxation, cultural experiences and a diverse range of sports make it completely unique.
