Altaussee

Altaussee, a picturesque climatic health resort with around 1,900 inhabitants, lies on the shores of the lake of the same name at an altitude of 712 metres. The first documented mention of the village and salt mining dates back to 1147. As early as the 19th century, Altaussee's magnificent location attracted holidaymakers and renowned writers.

A special highlight is the salt mine, where salt is still extracted today. During the Second World War, it served as a storage facility for stolen works of art. A visit to the fascinating Altaussee salt mines is definitely worthwhile. The Ausseerland region offers a wide range of leisure and sporting activities. In winter, a trip to the frozen Lake Altaussee is particularly worthwhile. Activities such as ice skating, curling, snowshoeing or winter horse riding allow you to experience the snow-covered landscape up close. Altaussee also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine. From cosy snack bars to upscale restaurants, visitors can discover and enjoy regional specialities.

Styrian Salzkammergut

The Styrian Salzkammergut - comprising the Ausseerland and Hinterberg Valley - is a region with upholds lots of charm and tradition. Folk music, dance and costume play a large role here. Many resorts in this area can still proudly present hand-made crafts, such as textile printing, custom tailoring, leather trouser crafting and hat crafting. The beautiful and diverse landscape with various valleys, the Traun river bed, many lakes and mountain peaks - such as the dominant Dachstein massif and the Totes Gebirge (dead mountains) - make this a unique place to visit.
